Sullivan and Gilbert
Sullivan and Gilbert, a play with music by Ken Ludwig (Lend Me A Tenor, Joy in Mudville), opens with Sir William Gilbert's letter to Sir Arthur Sullivan. Their infamous carpet squabble newly behind them, they are rehearsing for a review of their operettas, which will be attended by the Queen, but they have neither seen nor spoken with each other in months. Conversation is restored via the telephone, and we quickly move on to the Savoy theater, where we meet the rest of the cast: Richard D'Oyly Carte and the Savoyards. Violet Russell, a pretty, young soprano, is the newest cast member. Gilbert knows he's seen her before but can't quite place her. When he does, a confrontation is sure to follow. Questions quickly arise: Will Sullivan be there to conduct? Will Violet flee in embarrassment? And what in the world are we going to do with Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, son of the Queen! Drama, comedy and wonderful Gilbert and Sullivan music, what more could we want?
Directed by Rebecca Pillsbury, assisted by music director Zach Spencer and choreographer Jeff Wallach.
